Australia - The brewers of Oz

For years we've been told that Australians wouldn't give a XXX

They say Australian men love a cold beer on a warm day – and if the day’s not warm enough they’ll put on a heavy coat.

In fact, Aussies down about 110 litres of beer each a year, according to figures released by Japan’s Kirin beer company, which means they just miss a podium finish in the world beer-drinking stakes, coming in fourth behind the Czechs, Irish and Germans but ahead of the United Kingdom at sixth and the United States down in 13th place.

No surprise then to learn that a refrigerator empty of beer in Australia is thought to be faulty, as in: “Yeah, gotta stop off at the bottlo (liquor store) on the way home; the fridge is broken.” Beer has been such a large part of the way of life Down Under that a form of reverse prejudice exists. In most societies, men who like a drink are frowned upon, to varying degrees. Not so in the Wide Brown Land, where fathers will caution their sons to “never trust a bloke who doesn’t drink.” Some take this advice and refine it to open hostility towards a drinker who chooses something other than beer, as was evidenced when this writer recently went to pick up some Tasmanian cider for his wife and was abused by the stranger in line behind him, who let rip with exactly what he thought of a cider-drinking man.

The irony is, although Australians pride themselves as great beer lovers, generally speaking they are not great beer connoisseurs. The market is overwhelmingly dominated by two giants – Foster’s Group and Lion Nathan – and while these huge corporations are highly skilled at making and marketing mass-produced beer, their topselling brands can most kindly be described as bland, designed to appeal to the broadest possible market, and to be drunk in quantity.

As you’ve probably guessed, with few but thankfully increasing exceptions, Australia is overwhelmingly a lager land. Foster’s Group brewer John Cozens says the mainstream offerings can best be termed ‘international lager’ with a flavour somewhere between mainstream European and American lagers. He says the Aussie style does not accentuate any ingredient, striving for balance and cleanliness.

The top-selling brands are all in this lager style (despite the fact they may be labelled as bitter or draught) and they include Victoria Bitter and Carlton Draught (Victorian beers but with national reach, particularly VB), Tooheys New (Sydney and national), Fourex Bitter (Queensland), West End Draught (South Australia), Swan Draught (Western Australia), and Cascade (Tasmania). Carlton Cold and Hahn Ice were created to be national and the celebrity brand, Foster’s Lager, is nominally national, but you’d be hard-pressed to find somebody who drinks it. Like Paul Hogan, it’s far more popular overseas than domestically.

“The Australian beer style is essentially one of ‘cold drinkability.’ The flavours are essentially yeast-driven, rather than malt-driven, and there is usually a subtle hop character,” says Cozens.

“The beers are suited to being served at zero degrees Celsius, and are lightly flavoured and refreshing.” Of course, critics claim they are best drunk near freezing to hide their insipidness and that any brew worth its salt – even a lager – can and should be drunk a little warmer so the flavours and aromas are more active.

But, to be fair, Australia can be blisteringly hot, and there’d be few things less appealing after cutting the lawn on a sweltering summer weekend than a cellar temperature and mostly flat English ESB or Belgian Trappist ale.

And as the bloke is admiring his freshly cut lawn and enjoying his frosty ‘international lager’ he may have cause to muse about the impacts that have dramatically pocked the Australian beer landscape over the past 20 years or so.

Firstly, random breath testing for motorists driving under the influence of alcohol. Drink driving had been illegal but not hugely enforced, but state governments decided to crack down.

This made the traditional hour or two down the local with the mates after work a far more risky past-time. If you had too much, you could be nabbed by the ‘whollopers’ (police) on the drive home, but if you stuck to club soda then you’d be one of those non-drinkers that fathers warn their sons about.

Cue the rise of the reduced-alcohol beer. Basically they are in two categories – ‘light,’ including Hahn Premium Light at 2.7% alcohol by volume (ABV), Fourex Light at 2.4%, Cascade Premium Light 2.7% and Carlton Sterling 2.5%, and ‘midstrength’ including Carlton Mid and Fourex Gold, both at 3.5% – and they’ve allowed Australians to spend Saturday afternoon drinking at a barbecue but still drive home with less risk of losing their licence. In fact, Queensland’s Fourex Gold is now one of Lion Nathan’s top movers with a national fan base, and sales that outstrip its full-strength stablemate, Fourex Bitter.

Of course, some never acquired the taste for reducedalcohol brews, or couldn’t see the point of drinking that failed to get you drunk, and so decided to skip the pub after work and, shock of shocks, be home in time for dinner with the family. This dovetailed neatly with the rise in the Australian wine industry and in the privacy of his own home a man was free to drink whatever he liked, wasn’t he?

The result of more police vigilance on the roads and more chardonnay in the home fridge meant that beer sales stagnated. Brewers were forced to adapt. They had to expand their offerings beyond the ‘international lager.’ So brews in the ‘dry’ lager style, which were pioneered by the Japanese, hit Australian shelves and brands such as Tooheys Extra Dry and Carlton Dry enjoy a solid following.

Brewers also strengthened their range with high-end offerings such as Hahn Premium, which used German Hersbrucker hops rather than the ubiquitous Pride of Ringwood, and began selling foreign brands such as Stella Artois, Heineken, and Becks, which are brewed under licence in Australia but, annoyingly, are priced as imported products.

They also dusted off their ale-brewing manuals – Lion Nathan now puts out amber, India pale, and golden ales, plus a porter, under the James Squire name, while Foster’s nonlager line-up features VB Original, Cascade pale and amber ales, and Carlton Black, probably best described as a carbonated porter.

The ‘push-to-premium’ strategy also means the majors are competing in the same space as microbreweries that have been springing up like weeds in a drought. They’re mostly doing Continental European (such as the fabulous Wheat Store Ale in the German Hefe Weizen style from South Australia’s Barossa Brewing Company), English (Holgate Brewhouse’s Bitter Pale Ale from Victoria’s Macedon Ranges) and American Pale Ale clones such as Fremantle’s Little Creatures (which approximates the US standout, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale).

No report on the beer scene in Australia would be complete without special mention of the independent, but by no means micro, Coopers Brewery, which produces the worldclass Sparkling Ale and Best Extra Stout.

Thankfully they’re no longer Robinson Crusoe on an island called ‘international lager’.
