Nose: Buttery malt. Blackcurrants. Plums.
Palate: Bitterness edges out smooth, malty sweetness. Firm background fruitiness: suggestions of blackcurrants and plums. Hop resins supply a spicy counterpoint.
Finish: Dry. Malty, with nutty and roasted flavours. The hoppy bitterness is a little peppery.
Comment: A delightfully mellow yet complex old ale, but lacks the full character of the cask conditioned version.
