Nose
Mellow, chocolatey malt. Soft vinous notes. Subdued fruits (hints of green banana). Light liquorice.
Palate
Dark, chocolatey malt sweetness immediately countered by a liquorice, aniseed-like hoppiness. Complex estery fruit notes swirl in the background: red berries, pear, a little sharp citrus. A port-wine note emerges.
Finish
Warming and dry, with hops building to provide firm bitterness while malt and chocolate remain. Vinous notes linger.
Comment
A complex and fascinating, award-winning red ale in an attractive new, chunkier bottle.
