Nose

Toffee, banana and nutmeg-like spiciness.

Palate

Lots of banana toffee but also a powerful, dry acidity that tingles the throat. A gentle sweetness lies behind it all, with sharp berry fruits emerging later.

Finish

Dry, bitter and woody with banana and toffee-like malt, but sweetness is quickly lost.

Comment

This is the last batch of Prize Old Ale brewed at Gale's, now packaged at Fuller's in a bigger bottle than before and with a conventional cap rather than a cork. It much more lively and acidic than previous versions, and this enhances the drinkability. A challenging beer of real character.
