Nose: Rich malt overlaid with a woody, liquorice-like herbal aroma.
Palate: Sweet and malty at first, countered by a resin-like hop bitterness. Cherry and almond flavours combine with a citrus orange spikiness to create a fruit cake effect. More liquorice and herbal aniseed notes.
Finish: Warming and drying, with a tangy hoppy bitterness and more herbal flavours.
Comment: This year's model is not quite as sweet as some previous offerings (the hops this time are Fuggles and Styrians). It's very good already but needs time to mellow.
